Girlfriends are a Treasure
by: Glenda Friday, Feb 13, 2009
I completed my bachelor 's degree for my parents. It was more of their dream than mine. I completed my master's degree because it was a requirement for a "career position". Now that I am older, I have finally decided to complete a doctoral degree for "me". I thought this is really going to be a mistake but it was a dream I have held for a long time. At a weekend retreat with some girlfriends, we discussed dreams and starting life as the "new 30", needless to say we are all long past that age. I left the weekend renewed and rededicated to following my dream. I realized that my "girlfriends" are a treasure and will always be there to provide support.

Glenda, I am so happy to hear you are going to do something for self satisfaction. Doing your Bachelors for your parents was beautiful, you did it for love, doing your Masters for your career says you are not afraid to do what you need to. Going for your Doctorate might be the most rewarding experience of your life! I wish I was there..... Hope to hear more from you.
I, too, have decided to continue my education and work towards a doctorate. It has taken me many years to get to this point. I got both my bachelor's and master's in my early years, before marriage and children. Then, my formal education was put on hold. After four children and 20 years, I am back on track. With a full time job and a family, I can only manage one class per term, so it will take me years to achieve. But every class brings me one step closer to my dream. I try to be a role model for my children and show them that if we want something badly enough, we have to do whatever it takes to achieve our goals. I congratulate every woman who tries to better herself, whether in her education, career or personal life. Keep those dreams alive! You are worth it.

I thought your post was inspiring. So many of us want to have more opportunities in life and are lost as to how to begin and the thrill of finally arriving at the place one only dreamed about or thought it was for someone else who possed the lucky gene of success. In reality, education is for anyone and everyone who has the desire and enthusiasm for learning and self development such as yourself. Education can push us to becoming more then we ever thought possible no matter what our biological age is. Congragulations on your journey to the doctoral degree! I am not there yet, will be starting my Masters this spring and then who knows from there. This is a great place to connect and network with other women who are aspiring towards a new and lasting beginning.
