Achieving Life Balance

Life Can Move Fast

I recently went through a personal loss that reminded me the best way to prepare for the future is to live life to the fullest in the present. Life can move pretty fast, and often, we feel there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done. However, we must always remember to balance all the needs in life.

During a recent discussion with students about balancing the needs of school, family and work, I was reminded of this. Participating in an accelerated degree program and working full-time does not leave much time for family, friends and oneself. Making it all work is a juggling act and requires discipline and planning.

Here are a few suggestions for making it work:

  • First, manage your stress by being proactive and working ahead on school assignments. If the assignment is due on Sunday night, plan to have it completed by Wednesday. Give yourself some breathing room to avoid working in a panic at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday. During the first week, work hard to get ahead and stay ahead for the entire session.
  • Second, schedule time for yourself and your family. Each week put a time on the calendar to spend time with loves ones and don’t violate these times. For example, buy pre-paid tickets for dinner, plays, etc. with relatives to ensure you will go. Another great way to build in time for yourself each week is to join a book club, yoga class or bowling league. Don’t let anything interfere with these special times. Make sure you are taking time to live in the present, while preparing for your future.
